A hip, welcoming and forward-thinking New American bar and eatery, this well-loved historic landmark may offer an inkling of Salem’s future. Settle into the gorgeous wooden booths with “guilt-free” happy hour snacks like crunchy Brussels sprouts, fried avocado wedges and towering plates of nachos. If you stick around till dinner time you’ll be treated to poutine (Canada’s best-kept secret?), giant salads and a wide-ranging, mostly vegetarian menu.

Claiming to be “Salem’s Smallest Pub,” the photo-themed f/Stop’s encourages—make that demands—close interaction. Seating about 30 people max, it’s a spot where otherwise unlikely friendships have a way of blossoming. The focus is on hanging out and drinking: There’s no sports on the television, no video lottery machines, and no kitchen. Just a bunch of people who seem to all like each other pretty well enjoying the company and the libations. Well worth a visit!

This bustling craft brewery may lack the handmade vibe and intimacy of places like Taproot and f/Stop’s, but don’t count it out. In addition to a long list of local brews—including their own—you’ll find a fun and wide-ranging menu—Bavarian-style pretzels to taco salads to giant burgers and more—and daily and happy hour specials. You’ll find cocktails and wines, but it’s clear this is a place for serious hopheads!

This clubby bar and arcade is a real throwback, in the best sense. Jam-packed with vintage arcade games (Star Wars pinball, anyone?), it draws a rabid and dedicated fanbase. The food is just as much fun as the games are: Try Scotch eggs, soft-boiled, wrapped in cranberry-boar sausage, and fried, or the always-popular pork belly tacos. The Kamé Island burger, weighing in at half a pound and topped with succulent pork, may be for diehards only.
