Treat Yo’Self with Cannabis Topicals

By Diane

There are other ways to enjoy cannabis besides smoking it. You’ve probably even tried some delicious edibles, but have you ventured into the exciting new world of cannabis topicals?

Cannabis Topicals: How Do They Work?

If you read our cannabis education blog with any regularity, you’re familiar with the terms “cannabinoids” and “terpenes,” or what we sometimes call the “active ingredients” in cannabis. They interact with our bodies in various ways; in the case of cannabinoids, through specialized sites called CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors in turn help impart the cannabis plant’s effects—including THC’s psychoactivity—to the brain.

An interesting thing happens when cannabis is introduced to receptor cells close to the skin via a topical application (such as a salve, lotion or balm). Cannabis still elicits some of its familiar effects, but without any of the psychoactivity associated with THC.

What’s more, the terpenes contained in cannabis has a role to play as well. If you’ve ever felt the calming effects of inhaling fresh or dried lavender or noted the gentle uplift imparted by fresh lemon oil, you’ll know what we’re talking about. It turns out that the cannabis plant is particularly rich in these essential oils, which helps explain the prevalence of words like “Lemon” and “Skunk” in the names of cannabis strains!

Cannabis Topicals: How to Use Them

Cannabis topicals aren’t significantly different from any other such products. You can’t “overdose” on them, and the only negative reaction we’ve noted is the (extremely occasional) case of skin irritation in the case of a mild allergy or intolerance.

If you’re using a lotion or oil, simply apply it to your skin. If you’re using a rub, apply it on the muscle or joint that’s bothering you. Other types of topicals—like lip balms or bath bombs—are pretty self-explanatory.
