Cannabis: The Anti-Inflammatory Key to an Epidemic

By Diane

When you look at some of the health claims around cannabis, it can seem a little bit ridiculous. The laundry list of symptoms and conditions for which cannabis can be an effective treatment includes Alzheimer’s, IBS, arthritis, diabetes, chronic pain, Parkinson’s, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis—just to name a few of them.

But modern science is showing that there is an underlying cause behind many of these conditions: inflammation. And cannabis is perhaps the most effective anti-inflammatory we have. Specifically, research is showing more and more that we can turn to CBD for inflammation treatment.

How does it work? Well, let us back up a bit first.

Chronic Inflammation and Disease

Inflammation, as it turns out, is a completely normal cellular process. It’s how we defend ourselves from infections and parasites. Through inflammation, white blood cells effectively quarantine an area and flood it with toxic chemicals that destroy the invaders, and we live to breathe another day.

Under normal circumstances, inflammation is a good and necessary thing.

When inflammation is stimulated all the time, however—when it becomes chronic—it becomes a problem. A big problem.

Those toxic chemicals begin damaging your own cells and tissues, and depending on where exactly this happens in your body, different symptoms can begin to appear. If it happens in your joints, it manifests as arthritis. In your cardiovascular system, it manifests as heart disease. If it’s in your brain, it can lead to one of many forms of neurodegenerative disease. In fact, many top health experts now believe that inflammation may actually be the root cause of most diseases.

So what causes inflammation to become chronic? To put it bluntly, modern life.

A Modern Epidemic

We are constantly inundated with toxic chemicals that stimulate inflammation. Sugar and processed carbs stimulate inflammation. Stress causes inflammation.

And what do many people do when they’re feeling stressed? Eat sugary snacks with artificial preservatives, thereby compounding the problem and fanning the flames of disease.

Fortunately, there’s a clean, natural, green solution to the problem.

Cannabis: A Safe and Powerful Anti-Inflammatory

Remarkably, studies show that cannabis is over 20x stronger as an anti-inflammatory agent than aspirin, and 2x stronger than prescription hydrocortisone. It contains over 100 active compounds, and the two most investigated are THC and CBD.

Both of these cannabinoids have powerful anti-inflammatory effects, but they get there in different ways, mediated by how they interact with the body through different receptors.

THC proves more effective for managine neurodegenerative diseases, chronic pain, and cardiovascular inflammation, and swelling. CBD, on the other hand, seems to be somewhat better suited for digestive issues and muscle recovery, but it also has a positive effect on many of the same symptoms as THC. Because of its effects on a broad array of conditions, people are increasingly turning to CBD for inflammation treatment and management.

Using CBD for Inflammation

The potential of cannabis to treat the epidemic of chronic inflammatory disease is truly incredible. It may not be a miracle cure, but the number of people who find relief through it is miraculous enough. Better still, there’s no catch (well, except maybe federal regulations, depending on where you live).

If you wish to explore cannabis for your own health, we recommend taking a look at Leafly’s strain explorer as a resource to see what has worked for others with similar symptoms. You can also check out a few CBD products worth trying, and, of course, explore how you might minimize those other inflammation catalysts in your life.

After my Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis 2 years ago, i stopped all the Multiple sclerosis medicines prescribed due to severe side effects, and decided to go on natural herbal approach. My primary care provider introduced me to Rich Herbs Foundation and i immediately started on their Multiple Sclerosis herbal formula treatment, this herbal treatment has made a tremendous difference for me. My symptoms including shaking, muscle weakness, fatigue, mood swings, numbness, double vision and urinary retention all disappeared after the 4 months treatment! Their website is w w w. r i c h h e r b s f o u n d a t i o n . c o m. Its just amazing!

I live in California. I have a high CRP and have developed AFIB and after being put on B/P meds, I have gained 100 lbs which makes the inflammation worse and exercise very difficult. I am 68 years old, still working as a counselor with two offices. I want something to help heal inflammation not just cover it. Would CBD do that? Not looking to get high at all. I am totally confused on all the cannabinoids and how they work. What is your suggestion?

I am in my 50’s and until two months ago had zero experience with cannabis. 9 years ago I developed chronic severe edema with no known cause. My sleep was severely affected. My legs swelled to the point the skin could no longer cover them. Fluid poured from them. It took over a dozen diapers a day to contain the fluid. I developed MRSA. I wound up in the ICU with toxic shock. I got well enough to go home after a month and spent the next 5 months on IV antibiotics and the next six years on antibiotic injections every week. I still could not sleep. My sister gave me some granola bars with marijuana. That first night I slept like a baby. Within two weeks the swelling was gone. My fentanyl patches for end stage degenerative arthritis now work much better. All of my bloodwork is much better. My lupus symptoms are vastly improved. My entire quality of life is dramatically better. I am normally a law abiding citizen but will to do what I must to continue with this medication so that I can have living in my life. My physicians have all told me to continue with the cannabis. I have begun using cannabis oil topically for dermatitis with good results, better than the steroids I am prescribed. The fact that this medication remains illegal at the federal level is the real crime. Are we letting the pharmaceutical industry, who can’t reap the profits of cannabis the way they do with fentanyl (monthly cost for my prescription is $3800) keep this valuable medication off the legal market? This extremely potent anti-inflammatory agent needs to be researched, made legal and available to the millions of people with medical conditions who would benefit and have quality of life restored. I now can see myself returning to the ranks of the employed and self-supporting.

Almost two years ago I developed a blood clot in my right leg, which caused severe swelling (adema) in my right leg. I've been on blood thinners ever since, but the swelling has never gone down. Every doctor that I've consulted has told me the same thing, the swelling will probably NEVER go down. I have incurable but treatable rectal cancer. I've been on intravenous chemo off and for 8 years. I'm still here and feeling good except for my swollen leg, and I've also contracted sciatica, so as you can imagine, I have a hard time moving around. I don't smoke weed but I do eat edibles. I don't care for the "high" of eating edibles, so I've recently bought CBD/CBN/THC 1:1:1 edibles but haven't tried them as of yet. I purchased Hemp Oil which surprisingly has helped my sciatica, it also has helped my arthritis pain in my hands and believe it or not, a rather large bruise that I discovered one of my breasts. After two days of applying the hemp oil on the bruise, it's miraculously almost gone completely! So, now, my main issue is my swollen leg. I'm just wondering if anyone out there has suffered from edema like this and tried any cannabis product other than smoking weed, that has worked for swelling of this type. I would love to be able to ride my bike and walk on the beach like I used to. Walking with this huge swollen leg feels like carrying around a 10lb bag of potatoes strapped to my leg! And it's getting really old! If anyone has had this kind of issue and has tried something that works, please, please, please answer my comment. My doctors have already assured me that because of the blood thinners, most likely the clots are gone, but due to the scarring in my veins from the blood clots, I will always have this swelling issue. I refuse to believe that. SOMETHING HAS TO HELP! So, please, let me know if anyone knows what might help. Thank you in advance if you know of something.

Is it possible you have lymphedema? I have this condition in my arm and hand as a result of lymph nodes being removed from a breast cancer surgery. The only proven treamtent is called complete decongestive therapy and compression garments. Look for a therapist near you. Sadly, it didn't work very well for me as it made my hand worse but helped my arm. I have been trying Chinese herbs but also researching if CBD could help due to it's anti-inflammatory properties. So far I can't find anyone who has had success but I am on day 3 of taking about 60 mg per day. No change, but I know these things tend to take at least a month or two to see any change.
