Pot Questions: To Grind or Not to Grind Your Weed?

By Diane

Whether to grind or not to grind your weed is a pretty hot topic at our Have a Heart recreational marijuana shop in Bothell. One thing we all agree on, is that it depends on the particular strain of weed we’re smoking. Our budtenders can help you find the best weed for your lifestyle – and can advise on grinding, or not grinding, each of the amazing northwest strains of cannabis that we sell.

Grind your weed:

  1. When the buds are super moist and sticky, and you’ll wind up with more weed on your fingers than in the bowl if you break it up by hand.
  2. When you’re rolling joints, and you want an evenly distributed balance of cannabis throughout so they burn easier. No lumpy blunts!
  3. When you’re packing a bowl, ground weed will burn more consistently because there’s more surface area – instead of burning just one side of a nug. The extra oxygen moving through the ground weed helps it burn a bit hotter, which will give you a stronger hit.
  4. When you like the THC crystals from your cannabis bud, also known as “keef.” Most grinders have a keefbox, and after a few rounds of grinding you’ll have a nice stash of keef to add to a bowl to make it more potent – or to use on it’s own for a seriously out-of-this-world high.

Don’t grind it:

  1. When the weed you have on hand is a little dry, you can easily break it up with your fingers a bit – or leave it kind of chunky.
  2. When you want to just burn the edge of the nug in your bowl, to keep the hits on the lighter side.
  3. When you don’t want to lose potency at all…like, not one bit. Grinding weed does remove some of the trichomes, which are the crystal-like hairs that hold lots of the good stuff.

Does a typical hand grinder really work with resinous goo bud? Or does it just gob up in the grinder....or do I need to just use dryer weed?

I personally wouldn’t use a grinder for sticky bud because the grinder just kinda smears the weed around and a lot of crystals just get stuck to the sides of the grinder .... hence when u have a grinder and have used it forever there will always be little brown or green marks all inside of it aka like hash but u cat scrape it out without scraping metal off ur aluminum soft metal grinder... so idk I always just stick to my hands and if it’s that good of weed when ur done breaking up u can make finger hash and add that to ur bowl bong or blunt whatever u want

Nah when u dont grind u save potency from the trichomes. Which i didnt know because i thought the oils an tearing from ur hand could remove them too. U can get a good hit from both but to save potency just gently break it up with ur fingers an dont press to hard packing

Potent is how high it gets you off one hit. A good hit is a full lung killer (usually in common stoners)

I doubt you will see this or have already learned. But for new ones coming along. A good hit is more surface area burning at once cause more smoke as you breath it. So with it ground fine you can pack more in to have more surface area good airflow which creates thicker smoke. Now with grinding you also knock off more of the thc trichomes because all the friction happening during grinding. Now those trichomes get caught so along with other things. But that's the kief. So it has a shit ton of kief because a lot got knocked off. Now if you do it by hand there is less friction leaving more on there. But if you have done it the correct hand way it's pretty much fluffier so you cant get as much in there. Leading to less surface area burning so less smoke.

Well when you grind it you lose potency meaning you wont get as high as you would if you didnt grind it because it strips some of the thc away thats y you would need a good grinder that’s catches the kief n etc, BUT grinding it makes the hits you take LESS harsh on the throat meaning it'll be easier taking bigger hits which gets you higher quicker, breaking weed down by hand can save you more weed and make the blunt or joint thicker but it’ll be a tad bit more harsh on the throat (overtime it wont bother your throat) to take a huge hit cuz it’ll be harsher but if you pack it after you roll it, it will last A LOT longer when you smoke than it would grinded up, at least thats with my experience n knowledge

If your weed is just average, don't grind. Can't afford to part with any trichomes and compromise your high. ~ If it's really good, grind. You'll get stoned twice on the same bud. 💚

•Grinded weed = you’ll use more weed, harder to roll by hand, chance of losing potency, longer blunts, smoother hit, almost guarantees an even burn. •Broken down by hand = takes longer to break up, sometimes residue sticks to fingers, chance of uneven burn if you dont break down well enough, thicker joints/blunts, easier to roll, you save more weed, pack it well itll burn well which isnt hard tbh And overall they both burn at the same rate BUT i never timed each but from what i hear grinded weed burns a bit quicker it just burn evenly most of the time

I purchased a $15'ciffe grinder on Amazon. Blows away the small hand grinders, and in seconds flat.

Hey, you have shared very nice information. In my opinion, breaking down your flower into small pieces allows for all of the cannabis particles to burn completely as they are smoked.
